🍲 Dal Dhokli – Traditional Gujarati Comfort Food
Dal Dhokli is a popular and comforting dish from Gujarat. It is a wholesome one-pot meal made by cooking soft wheat flour pieces (dhokli) in spicy and slightly sweet toor dal (lentils). The dish is flavored with turmeric, chili, cumin, mustard seeds, and a touch of jaggery and lemon juice for a perfect balance of taste.
Dal Dhokli is often prepared for lunch and enjoyed with ghee, papad, or pickle. It is nutritious, filling, and loved for its rich homemade flavor.
📝 Ingredients
For Dal:
- 1 cup toor dal
- 3 cups water
- 1 small tomato (chopped)
- 1 tbsp peanuts (optional)
- ½ tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1–2 tbsp jaggery
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- Salt to taste
For Dhokli:
- 1 cup wheat flour
- 1 tbsp oil
- ½ tsp turmeric
- ½ tsp red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- Water to knead
For Tempering:
- 2 tbsp ghee or oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- Curry leaves
- Pinch hing (asafoetida)
👩🍳 Method
1️⃣ Cook Dal
- Wash and pressure cook toor dal with turmeric and water (3–4 whistles).
- Mash well and add more water if needed.
2️⃣ Prepare Dhokli
- Mix flour, oil, spices, and salt.
- Knead into soft dough.
- Roll thin and cut into diamond or square shapes.
3️⃣ Make Dal Dhokli
- Heat ghee, add mustard, cumin, hing, and curry leaves.
- Add tomato and cook.
- Pour cooked dal, add chili powder, jaggery, salt, peanuts.
- Boil the dal and add dhokli pieces slowly.
- Cook 10–15 minutes until dhokli becomes soft.
- Add lemon juice at the end.
🍽️ Serve With
- Chopped coriander
- Ghee on top
- Papad or pickle
